Lunch at Hy-Tea

On a September afternoon that felt more like July, who could resist lingering by Lake Ontario in Pickering? Just a few steps north of the boardwalk, on Wharf Street, Hy-Tea Restaurant and Tea Room drew a loyal clientele. Former banker Hyacinth Niles oversees the pretty blue and yellow room where customers linger over a cuppa. “When I came to visit the bay and saw the water it reminded me of the beautiful oceans of Jamaica,” said Hyacinth.

Manager Michlynn Walton, also known as Angel, said folks come from Mississauga, Oshawa, Uxbridge and points beyond to enjoy the food that made fresh daily. Like this luscious salad made with basil, red onions and tomatoes that Hyacinth had just brought back from the market moments earlier. Mmm. What could be better in September than juicy sun-ripened tomatoes? A classic shepherd’s pie comes with local veggies from B C Pickering Produce and Pistritto’s Farms & Greenhouses.

I expect to be eating a lot of apples during the 12 days of Savour the Season so let’s start with a classic combo: fresh apple pie topped with cheddar. That’s a lunch worthy of a walk along the Waterfront Trail.
